The session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) is held annually in New York which is attended by the officials from the Statistical Offices of UN Member States and the representatives of international organizations.
It is the highest-level intergovernmental format at the international level, the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities which oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and is a functional body of the UN Economic and Social Council.
Georgia was elected as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) in May last year. Membership mandate includes for the 2020-2023 period which officially entered into force since January 2020.
Georgia participates in this event for the first time as a newly elected member.
Within the framework of the 51st session, Gogita Todradze will participate in various panel discussions, he will address the members of the Commission, brief their foreign counterparts on recent changes in the country's statistical system, as well as future plans and priorities.
In parallel, the Executive Director of GEOSTAT will have meetings with the heads of statistics offices of various international organizations and partner countries, where current and future cooperation issues are discussed.
Membership of the UN Statistical Commission gives the country a great opportunity to develop and introduce comparable statistical methodology to the international standards, in terms of improving and developing the quality of national statistics and their comparability.
