GEOSTAT commences publishing an adjusted gender pay gap

Date: 24 February 2022

GEOSTAT has started publishing an adjusted gender pay gap. This data was calculated with the technical support of the UN Women. It should be noted that official statistics on this indicator are not produced in the region yet and Georgia is the first to take a step in this direction.

The gender pay gap is the ratio of the difference between the average salary for men and women to the average salary for men. The International Labor Organization (ILO) Fundamental Convention on Equal Remuneration for men and women workers for work of equal value obliges countries to ensure equal pay for equal work without discrimination. The adjusted gender pay gap takes into account the demographics (age, education, marital status, place of residence – region/type of settlement, etc.) and job characteristics (field of economic activity, occupation, etc.). This difference is an indicator of gender inequality related to salaries.

The calculation of the gender pay gap is represented progress in the development of gender statistics and one of the most important steps towards identifying gender barriers in the labor market which will contribute to the economic empowerment of women and the reduction of gender inequality.

Calculation of the adjusted gender pay gap data is also envisaged by the Strategy for the Development of the National System of Official Statistics of Georgia for 2020-2023 years.
