Mr. Gogita Todradze, Executive Director of the National Statistics Office of Georgia chaired the session of the Committee on Statistics of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) last time. The eighth session of the Committee of Statistics was held at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok and will last during the current week.
Mr. Gogita Todradze, Executive Director of Geostat opened the Committee on Statistics as the chair and addressed the audience with the opening remarks. According to him, the Committee on Statistics plays a crucial role in supporting the effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and he was proud to lead the work of the bureau during the past two years.
Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Minister, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Thailand, and the Director, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) participated with Mr. Todradze in the opening of the session
The ESCAP Committee on Statistics is the highest level of intergovernmental format and the main decision-making body on statistics in the Asia-Pacific region.
In his speech, Mr. Gogita Todradze expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed on our country and him personally. He stated that during those two years together with the bureau members, he endeavored to do his very best by discharging his responsibilities in accordance with the international standards, professional ethics, and principles so that the UN Committee on Statistics had a better opportunity to achieve its goals and have successful results.
At the session, Mr. Gogita Todradze introduced a new Chair of the ESCAP Committee on Statistics and the members of the Bureau. Besides, at the session Mr. Todradze reported on the work of the Bureau for two years of his chairing, he talked about the important steps taken, the work done and decisions made by the bureau.
8th Session of the Committee on Statistics is attended by the heads of the Statistical Offices of more than 50 ESCAP member countries and high-ranking representatives of various international organizations (UNSD, UNDP, UNICEF, UN WOMAN, FAO, IOM) .
In addition, during this week, within the framework of the eighth session of the ESCAP Committee on Statistics, the Executive Director of Geostat will participate in various thematic meetings and panel discussions on the challenges of data governance and the significance of the development of the civil registration and vital statistics system for the Sustainable Development Goals implementation process.
It should be mentioned that Mr. Gogita Todradze, Executive Director of the National Statistics Office of Georgia, chaired the Bureau of the ESCAP Committee on Statistics for two years from August 2020, while Georgia became a member of the bureau in 2018.
