Deputy Executive Director of Geostat Elected as Chair of the UNECE Working Group on Environmental Statistics

Date: 4 November 2025

Irakli Apkhaidze, Deputy Executive Director of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), has been elected as Chair of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Joint Working Group on Environmental Statistics for a two-year term.

The 22nd Session of the Joint Working Group on Environmental Statistics is taking place on 3-4 November this year in Geneva, Switzerland.

The sessions of this Working Group are held annually and are attended by more than 50 delegates representing various international organizations, including UNECE, EUROSTAT, UNSD, UNEP, OECD, UNITAR, as well as ministries and agencies from countries across Europe and Asia.

In his speech, Irakli Apkhaidze expressed gratitude to the delegates for their trust and emphasized that this confidence also reflects trust in the country and its national statistical service. He noted that this appointment represents international recognition of the steady progress Georgia has achieved in developing environmental statistics.

On the second day of the session, Mr. Apkhaidze will deliver a presentation detailing how Geostat is implementing UNECE’s 2024 sectoral review recommendations. These include the development of physical energy flow and air emission accounts, as well as the establishment of inter-agency coordination mechanisms. Particular emphasis will be placed on the recently developed Environmental Statistics Portal, a modern digital platform that provides open access to environmental data.
